Whether you are setting up a Dubai mainland company through the DED e-services portal, registering in Abu Dhabi under ADDED, or choosing a UAE freezone like IFZA, DMCC, or SHAMS – the first step is selecting the right business activity. Your chosen activity determines your license type, the authority that regulates you, and any external approvals required before your trade license can be issued.

Every company in UAE must declare at least one business activity when applying for a DED license or freezone license. Business activities are officially classified and regulated by the UAE Ministry of Economy. If you plan to carry out more than one type of work, you can add activities to your trade license – though some require separate approvals. What Is a Business Activity in UAE?

A business activity is the specific type of work your company is officially permitted to carry out under its trade license. In the UAE, every license – whether a DED license in Dubai, a Sharjah business license, or an IFZA freezone license – is tied to one or more approved economic activities. You cannot legally operate outside the activities listed on your license.

Activities are grouped into broad categories: Professional (consultancy, IT, marketing), Commercial (trading, e-commerce, import/export), Industrial (manufacturing, packaging), and Tourism (travel agencies, hotel management). Choosing the wrong category can affect your visa quota, office requirements, and the regulatory body that oversees your business.

If your business grows and you need to expand into a new area, you can apply to add activities in your trade license through the DED website or your freezone authority. Some activities – like healthcare, education, and financial services – need approval from an additional regulatory body before they can be added.

Which License Type Do You Need?
Commercial License
For trading businesses general trading, e-commerce, import/export, electronics trading, foodstuff trading and retail. The most common license type for Dubai mainland and freezones.
Professional License
For service-based businesses – IT consultancy, digital marketing, SEO services, accounting, management consultancy, engineering and other skilled activities.
Industrial License
For manufacturing and production businesses – furniture manufacturing, food processing, textile manufacturing, printing and packaging. Requires a physical facility.
Tourism License
For hospitality and travel businesses – travel agencies, tour operators, hotel management and desert safari services. Requires approval from DTCM in Dubai.

How to Add Activities in a Trade License in UAE

Check Approval RequirementsSome activities need external approval – from DHA, KHDA, RERA, or other bodies -before they can be added to your license.

Submit Amendment ApplicationLog into DED e-services or your freezone portal, select “Add Activity” and submit with required documents.

Pay the Amendment FeeFees vary by activity and zone. Most DED activity additions cost AED 300–1,000. Freezone fees vary by authority.

Receive Updated LicenseOnce approved, your trade license is updated to reflect the new activity. Some amendments are processed the same day.
